O dobry rap na Dour Festivalu zadba Roots Manuva.
Rodney Smith, znany jako Roots Manuva, to kolejna ważna pozycja festiwalu Dour. Jego rodzice pochodzili z małej miejscowości na Jamajce. W dzieciństwie, podczas spaceru z mamą, pierwszy raz w życiu usłyszał z głośników brzmienie niskiego basu, co w jakiś sposób zbliżyło go do muzyki. Najpierw kolekcjonował kasety, potem trochę próbował być DJ-em, ale dopiero gdy poznał hip-hop, jego muzyczne życie nabrało sensu.
W jego utworach muzyka odgrywa równie ważną
rolę co teksty. Twórczość Rodneya mocno opiera się na młodzieńczych latach, a w
domu nigdy nie przelewało się. Tak jak np. tytuł debiutanckiej płyty z 1999 roku
- Brand
New Second Hand – to było określenie, jakiego używała jego mama na
okazjonalne prezenty z odzysku. Do tej pory Roots Manuva wydał osiem płyt, z
czego ostatnią 4everevolution w
zeszłym roku.
Pojawiał się też gościnnie w utworach m.in.
Audio Bullys, Delsa, Gorillaz, Killa Kela czy Nightmares on Wax.

Rodney Smith aka Roots Manuva is an artist that
you can’t miss at the Dour Festival. His parents both came from a small village
in Jamaica. When he was a kid, the first time he heard the sound of low bass,
was during a walk with his mum. In a way, that experience made him, who he is
now. After that music appeared in his life for good. First he started to
collect tapes, next tried to be a DJ. But when he heard hip hop, he found his
way to walk on.
In his songs lyrics are as important as the music. Rodney's work is based heavily on his early years, when the material situation of his family, wasn't very good. His debut album Brand New Second Hand has been released in 1999. He made up the title after his mums saying, which she used to describe gifts for her family made from recycled, old materials.
Roots Manuva released eight albums, the last one - 4everevolution – came in 2011.
He also appeared as a guest on albums made by Audio Bullys, Dels, Gorillaz, Killa Kela, Nightmares on Wax and others.
